Mangosteen Pill vs juice, which is better?
Is it preferable to take a mangosteen capsule or to drink mangosteen juice? One advantage of mangosteen capsules versus drinking mangosteen juice is that you would not be consuming extra calories present in the form of fructose sugar in the juice. There are many beneficial fruit juices, such as pomegranate, cranberry, goji, noni, acai juice, cranberry, orange, grapefruit, and others. If you drank a few ounces of each every day, that would be too many calories. Hence, the advantage of the capsules is that they have practically no calories.

Xanthones in mangosteen fruit, juice and capsules
Xanthones are the major active ingredients in the mangosteen plant. Xanthones are mostly in the rind and seed, and less in the mangosteen fruit. We use the whole mangosteen - rind, seed and fruit - in order to provide you with the full spectrum of xanthones, which comprise about 6 to 10 percent of the whole fruit. There are about 20 different xanthones in the whole mangosteen fruit and scientists are trying to find out how they work in the body when ingested. Mangosteen fruit itself has many beneficial compounds that act as antioxidants.

Xanthones
Mangosteen has a number of xanthones and beneficial substances. Some of these include mangostin, mangostenol, mangostenone A, mangostenone B, trapezifolixanthone, tovophyllin B, alpha- and beta-mangostins, garcinone B, mangostinone, mangostanol, and flavonoids.

Mangosteen side effects, safety, danger
Mangosteen juice and mangosteen supplements became popular in the United States starting about 2004. Thus far, after hundreds of thousands or millions of people taking mangosteen supplements, we are not aware of any mention in the medical literature of case reports of significant mangosteen side effects or negative reactions or any danger. See Mangosteen side effects for the latest research and review.

Mangosteen fruit, juice and supplement refrigeration
Q. Does this mangosteen product have to be refrigerated after opening the bottle?
A. Herbs, in general, do not have to be refrigerated. They can last for years if kept in a cool, dry place. This mangosteen bottle does not need to be refrigerated, but the juice does after opening the bottle.

Q. Could someone tell me if the mangosteen capsules are 500 milligrams how many would you take to equal the three ounces that a mangosteen juice company recommends?
A. There are quite a number of different mangosteen juice products on the market, each with its own method of processing and concentration. Many juice bottles mix mangosteen with other fruit juices. It is not easy to make a comparison. One advantage of the capsules is that the calories and sugar (fructose) are avoided. Most people take one or two mangosteen capsules a day.

Extract or whole fruit powder
Q. Is the mangosteen product an extract, or the real fruit? Is it organic?
A. This mangosteen product is organic and full spectrum whole product with all the xanthones.

Different products sold online
Q.
What is the equivalence between Xango mangosteen juice or  juice from other companies and your mangosteen product?
A. We have no idea what the equivalence would be between the mangosteen capsules and the Xango mangosteen juice. There are dozens of different mangosteen manufacturers and they each mix mangosteen juice with various other fruit juices (to make it more palatable), so we basically would be comparing apples and oranges. By the way, the other fruit juices would have health benefits, too.

Both mangosteen fruit juices and mangosteen powder in capsules are likely to be beneficial, but one can't say over the long run which is better.

Testimonials, treating or curing a medical illness
Q. Do you have any testimonials about your mangosteen pills, does it cure or prevent cancer?
A. Those who sell supplements are not allowed by the FDA to mention testimonials that refer to a particular product treating or curing a disease. If we mentioned such mangosteen testimonials on this website, for instance cancer cure or prevention, we would not be in accordance with FDA rules.

Q. What medical conditions does mangosteen treat or cure?
A. Human studies are not available for us to make any claims regarding the treatment of a disease with mangosteen. And even if there were, the FDA does not allow claims of disease treatment for a dietary supplement unless the FDA provides the specific language that can be used. Thus far they have no such statement on mangosteen.

Antioxidant benefit
Q. How does mangosteen antioxidant compare to other fruit and herb antioxidants? How does it compare to alpha lipoic acid, acetylcysteine, acetyl l-carnitine, or carnosine?
A. Mangosteen antioxidants are mostly xanthones which are different than other antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables. It is difficult to say whether mangosteen antioxidants are healthier or not than other antioxidants since that would require long term human studies, which have not been done. As a rule, it is a good idea to have a wide variety of antioxidants rather than the same ones all the time. R-Lipoic acid, acetylcysteine, acetyl-L-carnitine, or carnosine are all excellent antioxidants and they work in different ways.

Q. Which is healthier to take, amla, mangosteen, goji, grape seed extract, or pomegranate, etc? There are so many healthy supplements and I find it difficult to decide.
A. It is difficult to predict which herbal supplement or combination is the best supplement program. One option is to alternate the use of different herbs. For instance you can try mangosteen for one week then try pomegranate for another week, then something else such as grape seed extract, goji berry or amla, and a month later come back to mangosteen herb for another week. There is no right or wrong answer. Different herbal experts are likely to have different opinions.

Combinations
Q.
Is it okay to take an acai supplement, pomegranate, goji berry, the same day as a mangosteen supplement?
A. We don't foresee any major problems. These supplements appear to be quite safe.

Daily use, long term
Q.
Is it okay to take a mangosteen capsule daily for months or years?
A. Mangosteen appears to be quite safe, but since long-term human studies are not available, it is a good idea to take 2 days off each week or a week off each month. This is a general guideline that can be applied to many nutritional supplements.

Whole fruit and rind
Q.
You write in your product description - Mangosteen capsules 500 mg that it's made from whole fruit and rind, but on the shield of the bottle it is written - active xanthones from mangosteen pericarp and whole fruit. So whats right?
A. The whole mangosteen fruit includes the inside flesh and the outside rind called the pericarp. Therefore, this mangosteen product includes xanthones from the pericarp and a high ORAC value whole fruit.
