Benefit and review
Natural R-alpha lipoic acid (R-ALA) is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body metabolize sugar properly. R-ALA is much more potent than commonly sold synthetic alpha lipoic acid. Also consider additional potent antioxidants such as carnosine, acetyl-L-carnitine, and acetylcysteine. These nutrients are found in a popular natural vision support formula called Eyesight Rx.
Why we suggest R-Lipoic supplement
At Physician Formulas we use the highest quality R-Alpha Lipoic Acid we can find. Most scientists believe R-Alpha Lipoic Acid is more potent (2 times on average) than commonly sold synthetic alpha lipoic acid which contains both the R and S forms. The S form is chemically the mirror image of the R form of lipoic acid and cannot be used by the body, hence it is not very useful. Thus, 50 mg of R-Lipoic Acid is, on average, equivalent to 100 mg of synthetic lipoic acid. Alpha lipoic acid is readily absorbed from the diet or as a supplement. *
Why limit to 50 mg?
Dr. Ray Sahelian, M.D., a world renowned nutritional expert, says, "Just because researchers use high doses of alpha lipoic acid for a brief period and find it generally safe does not mean these same high doses, such as 300 to 600 mg, will be safe when used daily for prolonged periods such as months or years. I do not feel comfortable recommending more than 50 mg of R-alpha lipoic acid on a regular basis unless closely monitored by a health care provider."
Suggested Use, dosage, how much to take
As a dietary supplement, take one capsule in the morning on an empty stomach or with breakfast as recommended by your health care provider. We suggest taking it no more than 3 or 4 times a week.

Q. I recently bought R lipoic 50 mg, does it need to be refrigerated?
A. No, but if you don't plan to finish the bottle in less than a year, then it may be a good idea to keep it in the refrigerator.
Combining with antioxidant supplements
Q. Can it be combined daily with other antioxidants such as carnosine, acetylcysteine, or acetyl-L-carnitine?
A. Yes, but only if a small portion of a capsule of each is used. Another option is to alternate their use, each day taking a different one.
Side effects, adverse reactions
High doses can cause excessive stimulation, rapid heart beat, perhaps irregular heart beat or palpitations, being very alert at night and insomnia. See Lipoic for the latest studies on the side effects of this antioxidant nutrient and a review of its safety profile.
