Two new human studies put berberine back in the spotlight - one even measured GLP-1. What they found, what they did not find, and where berberine fits in a metabolic health routine.

The 30-Second Version

  • Two new human studies on berberine were published within a week of each other (late August / early September 2026)
  • A low-dose berberine extract raised GLP-1, the satiety hormone everyone is talking about, in a small placebo-controlled trial
  • A second trial combined berberine with white mulberry leaf and chromium and saw improved insulin sensitivity markers in adults with obesity
  • Both studies were small and short. Interesting, early, and worth watching - not promises
  • Berberine remains one of the most-studied botanicals for metabolic health support

📈 Why berberine is suddenly everywhere

GLP-1 is the hormone behind the biggest story in health right now. Prescription GLP-1 drugs changed how the public thinks about appetite, blood sugar, and weight - and sent people looking for what the supplement aisle might offer on the same theme.

Berberine, a bright yellow alkaloid extracted from plants like goldenseal and barberry, has been studied for metabolic health for decades. So when new human data connects berberine to GLP-1 itself, people pay attention. In the last two weeks, two new studies did exactly that.

🔬 Study #1: a low dose and the GLP-1 signal

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial, 36 healthy adults took a bio-optimized berberine extract (Metaberine) at just 200 mg per day for 14 days.

The researchers reported that GLP-1 levels rose 29% in fasting measurements and 22% after meals compared to placebo. The study also saw improvements in fasting and post-meal glucose measures and favorable shifts in cholesterol markers. No adverse events were reported.

For context, the authors point to earlier human work using standard berberine at 900 to 1,000 mg per day that showed GLP-1 increases in the 12% to 20% range - at roughly five times the dose.

The caveats matter: 36 people, 14 days, one proprietary extract. Small and short is how early evidence always looks. The research team says larger trials are already in motion.

🧪 Study #2: the combination question

The second study, published in the journal Nutrients, randomized 93 adults with obesity to a supplement combining berberine, white mulberry leaf extract, and chromium picolinate - or a placebo - for 12 weeks.

The supplement group showed meaningfully better insulin sensitivity scores and greater reductions in BMI and body fat measures than placebo.

Here's the part most headlines will skip: the researchers themselves flagged that because no ingredient was tested alone, they can't say which component did what. They also noted that European food safety regulators recently concluded they can't yet establish a safe daily intake level for berberine because of data gaps. Science is allowed to be a work in progress, and honest researchers say so.

⚖️ What this does NOT mean

  • Berberine is not a drug, and no supplement is a stand-in for prescription GLP-1 medications
  • These were small, short trials measuring markers in specific groups of people - not outcome promises for you
  • Berberine can interact with medications. If you take anything prescription, talk to your doctor first
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? This one isn't for you without medical sign-off

🌿 Where berberine fits in a routine

Within the supplement world, berberine's lane is metabolic support: it supports healthy blood sugar levels already in the normal range and supports healthy lipid metabolism. That is what it is, said plainly.

The most common studied dose of standard berberine extract is 500 mg, taken with meals. Consistency over weeks is the pattern in the research - this is a routine ingredient, not an event ingredient.
