What is it? Where is it found?
L-Carnosine is a small molecule composed of the amino acids beta-alanine and histidine, and is found in relatively high concentrations in several body tissues. Carnosine is included in two popular formulas: Mind Power Rx for mental enhancement and Eyesight Rx for visual enhancement.

Combination with other antioxidants
L-Carnosine is a Dietary Supplement and potent antioxidant. This product may be used with other antioxidant pills, such as R-Lipoic acid, N-Acetylcysteine or Acetyl-L-carnitine, but when combining several such pills it is a good idea to reduce the dosage of each or alternate their use. Too high doses of antioxidants could interfere with their overall health benefits.

Suggested Use, dosage, how much to take
As a dietary supplement, take one capsule in the morning a few minutes before breakfast or as recommended by your health care provider. Use one or two times a week but not daily. High dosages of carnitine can cause adverse reactions as reviewed below.

Side effects, safety, caution, risk
L-Carnosine is a safe nutritional antioxidant with many benefits when used in dosages ranging from 50 to 500 mg. Higher doses could cause shallow sleep. See more information and research review on L-Carnosine side effects.

L-Carnosine supplement dosage
Q. What is the right dosage of carnosine supplement? I see carnosine supplement bottles that say take up to four 600 mg capsules a day while on some websites the carnosine dosage recommendation is much less.
A. The effective and safe L-carnosine dosage for long term use is not clear. A carnosine dosage of 100 to 500 mg a few times a week seems safe. Nobody knows for sure what the ideal dosage of carnosine is in humans, and every person is different. However as a general guideline, we believe the lower amounts are probably just fine and people can open a 500 mg L-Carnosine capsule and take a portion of it or take the full capsule twice a week.

Combinations, interactions
Q. Can carnosine supplement be taken the same day as Mind Power Rx?
A. It's possible. First learn how each supplement works by itself in your case, and then once you know how you feel from each one separately, then you may combine a carnosine supplement with Mind Power Rx or other supplements. However, if you take both, open a capsule of the L-Carnosine capsule and take only a third or half.

Dosage, smaller amounts
Q.
I am looking for carnosine at 100 mg or 200 mg. Do you supply different strengths and amounts?
A. We only carry L-Carnosine 500 mg pills, but it is easy to open a capsule by pulling on each side, pouring our a portion in a glass of water or juice, and closing the capsule to use the rest another day.

Research review
PLoS One. 2015. A Dietary Supplement Containing Cinnamon, Chromium and Carnosine Decreases Fasting Plasma Glucose and Increases Lean Mass in Overweight or Obese Pre-Diabetic Subjects: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of 4-month treatment with a dietary supplement containing cinnamon, chromium and carnosine in moderately obese or overweight pre-diabetic subjects. Four-month treatment with a dietary supplement containing cinnamon, chromium and carnosine decreased fasting plasma glucose (blood sugar) and increased fat-free mass in overweight or obese pre-diabetic subjects.

Hum Psychopharmacol. 2017. L-carnosine as an adjuvant to fluvoxamine in treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder: A randomized double-blind study. Dysregulation of glutamate is implicated in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Here, we assessed the efficacy of L-carnosine as adjuvant to fluvoxamine in OCD treatment. Forty-four patients diagnosed with moderate to severe OCD were recruited in a randomized double-blind trial. Patients received either L-carnosine or placebo as adjuvant to fluvoxamine for 10 weeks. L-carnosine results in significant reduction of obsessive-compulsive symptoms when used as an adjuvant to fluvoxamine.
